In this post, I will show you how to make apple crisp step by step. This is a quick recipe to make and it’s a perfect comfort food! I eat this as a snack or for breakfast. Besides the sugar ☺ it’s a pretty healthy dessert too! The apples are tender and juicy and the topping is sweet and crunchy! I’ve included the video instructions at the end of the post if you’d like to see how I make my Apple Crisp with Oats recipe!
Ingredients for my Homemade Apple Crisp with Oats Recipe
As long as you have apples handy, you likely have all of the other ingredients needed to make the apple crisp. The topping is made with flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and butter. I use quick oats but you can use old-fashioned oats as well. I’ll admit I’ve never eaten steal-cut oats so I couldn’t say how they would do with this recipe. For the filling, you’ll need six of your favorite apples, more brown sugar, a pinch of salt, some nutmeg, and some more cinnamon.
How To Make Apple Crisp – Directions
Preparing the Topping
The first step in making the apple crisp is to prepare the topping. I mixed all of the dry ingredients into a bowl and then cut in the butter. I was almost certain I had a pastry cutter, but I couldn’t find it! So I tried cutting the butter in with a fork or two…but the issue I had was that the butter was way too cold and it was getting to be heavy labor. I decided to make life easy and slipped on my latex gloves. I mashed and squished the butter up until I got a nice crumbly mixture. I covered it and put it into the fridge while I prepared the apple crisp filling.
Getting the Filling Ready
Now for the filling! I peeled, cored, and sliced the apples and put them into a bowl. I used Macintosh apples for this apple crisp. Many recipes call for “tart” apples, but I think you should use the variety of apples that you like best. Just make sure you slice the apples thinly so they’ll bake well and turn out soft and delicious!
The next step is to toss the sugar, salt, and cinnamon into the bowl of apples. Toss well to make sure everything is evenly combined. At this point, you’ll be enjoying the beautiful aromas of the apple crisp ingredients!
Assemble and Bake the Apple Crisp
Into a buttered 9×13 inch pan, I poured the apple mixture and spread the apples evenly. Then I sprinkled the topping mixture evenly over the apples. I baked the apple crisp for 45 minutes in a 350 F preheated oven. Depending on the type of apple you use; and the thickness of the slices, you may need up to 60 minutes of baking time to ensure the apples are soft. I’d say to check at the 45-minute mark to make sure they’re fork-tender. If not, keep baking and checking every 15 minutes.
Because I used Macintosh apples, my apple crisp only needed 45 minutes. Macintosh apples are soft so they bake quicker than crispy apples. The topping is a beautiful golden brown and you can see that melty sweetness underneath!
Let’s serve up some apple crisp! It’s best served warm. I like it as is but you can serve this with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if you like!
Tips
- Use apples that you love to eat but remember the crispier the apple, the longer the baking time is needed.
- Let your butter sit on the counter a little, if it’s hard as a rock, it’ll be very difficult to cut into the topping mixture.
- In this recipe, I’m very light on the cinnamon, feel free to double the amount that I use.

Hello Rain,
Your apple crisp sounds yummy, a nice treat! I love anything with apples.
Take care, have a great day!
Me too Eileen! The apple crisp went fast! ☺
Apple crisp is one of my comfort foods, Rain, and this looks delicious. I haven’t found Macintosh apples our stores since before the pandemic. It’s my favorite apple. But now I have to use honey crisp or another. I love the look of your new website! The tabs at the top of the post for jumping to the recipe and printing are a user friendly aid. I get irritated when using recipes online and you have to wade through all kinds of things before you find the actual recipe. But your posts, I read all of, because they’re interesting, well laid out, and illustrated. This makes it easy to follow and enjoy. Kudos to you for adding in both Fº and Cº and grams and cups. That makes your recipe useful worldwide. And your “You May Enjoy” section is a nice touch! Have a great day!
Louise! ♥ I love your comment. Thank you so much! I’m having a memory right now of when you left me such a thoughtful comment on one of my cheese making posts on Rainy Day Cheesemaking. I’m actually in the process of re-making all of those recipe posts to put here, so I remembered what you said to me about the F & C temps! Weird how you can’t find Macintosh apples?? I do love honey crisp but Macintosh are just so soft, I hope you can get them soon. Thanks my friend. ♥♥
