Homemade Chunky Pizza Sauce! This is my go-to recipe for every pizza that I make. It’s simple and uses so few ingredients, and the taste is just wonderful! I also use this for a simple pasta sauce!
Ingredients For My Chunky Pizza Sauce
Simple ingredients: 4 pints of canned tomatoes, olive oil, powdered oregano, garlic and some sugar. I use my home-canned tomatoes. When you can tomatoes, you need to use an acidic ingredient to make sure the PH levels are safe for water bath canning. I use lemon juice, so I offset the tartness of the lemon juice by adding one sugar cube per pint that I use. Of course, this is optional.
The final and very important last ingredient is fresh basil. I have substituted fresh basil for dried, but I find it doesn’t really turn out the same – the flavor is much better with fresh basil. When it’s not gardening season, I buy these types of basil plants from the grocery store. I buy 3-5 plants at a time and keep them well-watered so that they continue to grow leaves for months after I harvest them.

How To Make Chunky Pizza Sauce – Step By Step
Step one is to chop your garlic, and then your basil.
In a pot, heat the olive oil on medium-low heat. TRUST ME – don’t let it get too hot because your garlic will BURN quite quickly. Yes, I know first hand!! Add the garlic to the oil and let it cook for about a minute until it’s fragrant, then add the basil and stir well. Add the rest of the ingredients to the pot, bring to a boil, and simmer for 30 minutes, partially covered.
About 5 minutes into the simmer, I take a potato masher and mash down the sauce to make sure any large pieces of tomatoes are crushed. I love the colors of this sauce! When a meal is visually pleasing, I think it adds to the flavor!
When I use the sauce on my pizza dough, I use a fork and lift the chunky parts out so that I don’t have too much liquid on my pizza dough. I usually brush the pizza dough crust with the sauce to keep it from burning. Here is my recipe for Take-Out-Style Pizza Dough.
